This 5-day journey is the ultimate Moroccan adventure, taking you from the historical and spiritual heart of Fes to the vibrant red city of Marrakech. You’ll traverse the majestic Middle and High Atlas Mountains, journey through lush valleys and dramatic gorges, and experience the magic of the Sahara. The highlight is an overnight stay in a desert camp in Erg Chebbi, where you’ll ride camels over golden dunes, sleep under a blanket of stars, and connect with the timeless culture of the Berber people.
Your adventure begins as we depart Fes and head towards the Sahara. Our first stop is the charming alpine-style town of Ifrane, often called “Switzerland of Morocco,” before continuing to the cedar forests of Azrou. Here, you’ll have the unique opportunity to stop and hand-feed the resident Barbary macaque monkeys in their natural habitat.
We’ll travel through the fertile plains and mountains to the city of Midelt, where we stop for a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, the scenery transforms as we follow the winding Ziz River through a spectacular palm grove. We’ll make a photo stop at the impressive Ziz Gorges before continuing our journey to the village of Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. You’ll check into a hotel on the edge of the desert, ready for the adventures ahead.
Today is all about the desert. After a relaxed morning and lunch, you’ll begin the quintessential Sahara experience: a camel trek. As you ride your ship of the desert, you’ll slowly make your way into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Your destination is a traditional Berber desert camp. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with refreshing mint tea before climbing the highest nearby dune to witness a breathtaking sunset over the vast expanse of sand. The evening comes alive with the rhythmic beats of Berber music around the campfire, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner. Later, take a moment to walk away from the camp and experience the profound stillness and silence of the desert night before retiring to your tent.
Wake up early to capture the magical sunrise over the dunes before riding your camel back to the village. After a refreshing shower at the hotel, we depart the desert. Our route takes us on an off-road drive across the “hamada” (rocky desert) to the historic town of Rissani, where you can optionally explore its bustling, authentic market (souk).
Continuing north, we pass through Erfoud, the fossil capital of Morocco, with an opportunity to visit a cooperative and see artisans working with ancient fossils. The real highlight of the day awaits at the Todra Gorges. Here, the river has carved a dramatic canyon with towering cliff faces on either side. You’ll have time to hike and explore this stunning natural wonder. We conclude the day by driving into the beautiful Dades Valley, where our hotel for the night is located.
Today we travel the legendary “Route of 1000 Kasbahs,” a stunning drive through the Dades Valley lined with ancient fortified villages. We’ll take a detour along an off-road trail to visit a Berber nomad family living in caves, offering a rare glimpse into their traditional lifestyle of herding goats and sheep.
The scenery softens as we pass through the fragrant Rose Valley (Kelaat M’gouna), known for its annual rose festival, before arriving at the lush Skoura Oasis, home to the magnificent Amerhidil Kasbah. Our final destination for the day is Ouarzazate, a city often called the “Hollywood of Africa” for its famous film studios. We’ll settle into our hotel for the night.
After breakfast, we begin with a visit to the impressive Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate. We then drive to the world-famous Ait Benhaddou, a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site. This ancient, fortified village (ksar) is a masterpiece of southern Moroccan architecture and has been the backdrop for countless films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
We’ll then begin our final leg of the journey, crossing the majestic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass. Our route includes a stop at the atmospheric ruins of the Telouet Kasbah, once the seat of the powerful Glaoui family. We’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch in a local restaurant in Telouet before continuing the drive, descending through winding roads with breathtaking panoramic views. We arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon, where your unforgettable 5-day tour comes to an end.
