This 3-day desert circuit from Marrakech is a classic Moroccan adventure. It takes you from the city to the Sahara and back in a short but memorable loop. You will cross the High Atlas Mountains via a dramatic mountain pass. You will explore a famous UNESCO-listed Kasbah used in Hollywood films. The journey continues through lush valleys and palm groves to the edge of the desert. The highlight is a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. You will spend a night in a desert camp under a blanket of stars. The final day includes a visit to a traditional market before returning to Marrakech.
Your 3-day adventure begins at 8:00 AM with a departure from Marrakech. The route crosses the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka pass. Several stops allow for photos of the dramatic mountain panoramas.
The journey continues to the famous Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified village has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It has served as a backdrop for many films, including Gladiator and The Mummy. You will have time to explore the Kasbah and its ancient structures. Lunch is available here before we continue. The drive then proceeds through Ouarzazate and along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” to the Dades Gorges. You will stay overnight at a hotel near the gorges.
After breakfast on a terrace overlooking the valley, you continue towards the Todra Gorges. A short stop allows for a walk alongside the towering canyon cliffs and the clear river below. From there, the route heads to the Sahara Desert, passing through the palm-filled Tafilalet valley. You arrive at Merzouga in the late afternoon. After a brief stop at the hotel, you begin a camel trek across the dunes. The ride lasts about one hour and includes a stop to watch the sunset from the top of a high dune. You then continue to the desert camp for the night. You will be welcomed with mint tea. Dinner is served under the stars when weather permits. Afterwards, local guides lead drumming and music around the fire. You can walk among the dunes and stargaze before sleeping.
Wake early to witness the sunrise over the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. After the sunrise, you ride the camels back to the hotel. Following breakfast and a warm shower, you begin the return journey to Marrakech. The route passes through Rissani, home to the largest traditional souk in southern Morocco. Leaving behind the vast Draa Valley with its palm groves, you continue through changing scenery. You will arrive in Marrakech in the evening, where you will be transferred to your accommodation. This marks the end of your 3-day desert tour.
We specialize in private tours to ensure a personalized experience. This means the tour is just for your group. If you are a solo traveler or looking to meet people, please contact us. We can sometimes arrange shared group tours upon request.
If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange for a 4×4 vehicle to take you to and from the desert camp so you can still enjoy the sunset and sunrise.
Pack comfortable clothes, sturdy walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat for the daytime. Evenings and early mornings in the desert and mountains can be very cold, especially from October to April. Warm layers, a jacket, and a scarf are essential.
